Bully (PS2)

Mon Dec 18, 2006, 5:11 PM
Alright, i am going to start doing video game reviews for games i have. Why? because i am bored lol. The first game on my list is Bully by Rockstar for the PS2.

Story:
Alright, this game focusus on a teenager.. i think he is 12 or so named Jimmy Hopkins. His mom has jsut gotten maried again for the millionth time, and has droped Jimmy off at Bullworth Academy for a year while she goes on a 1 year Honey Moon with her new husband(who the heck has the money to go on a 1 year honey moon????). Anyways this little "backstory" isnt really important to the game. From the begining you are just a kid trying to fly under the radar, however this quickly changes and you get involved with the games main "bad guy" (term used loosley) named Gary. He talks you into doing some bad stuff and gets you invovled, and hated, by all the different Cliques in the game. However as the story progresses you gain respect from the factions in a vein attempt at creating peace and uniting them all. Overall, i wasnt to impressed with the story, it was good, but it didnt quite keep me interested as you could see what was coming a mile away.
Gameplay: The gameplay in this game must of been one of its strongest points. It has loads of entertaining mini games ranging from word jumbles in english class, button mashers in science and shop class, bike and go kart races, lawn mowing, paper routes and tons of hidden stuff to collect that i guess could be considered a "game". Anyways the main game is composed of a lot of missions that have you doing random things, such as rescuing kids from a burning gym, trashing a rich kids house, saving nerds from jocks, and tons of other things. In fact, i never felt any of the missions were the same, they all kept it interesting and made me want to keep playing. The controls in the game are tight as well, i never had a problem with targetting (a problem that plagued me in the GTA series) and traveling around town was simple as well, all though i would of enjoyed being able to increase my "skill" with bikes so i didnt fall off so easily. overall i must same the gameplay was just great, it's a type of game i know i have played before, but everything in this game felt new, maybe it was the fact that i was a 13 year old and there was no drugs, alcohol, sex or any other 18+ content in the game, but it just felt "New"even though it isnt.
Graphics: Probobly one of the weeker points in the game, the graphics were good, but not extrodanary. Theres no facial expressions, and the backgrounds are unimpressive as well. There was nothing that made me go "Wow thats beutifull". The charachters are clocky ish, but theres a large assortment of them, so the sheer quantity and diversity helps make up for the average presentation of each one. Overall the game looked good, but not great. Its a Rockstar game however and they have never been known, by me anyways, as having good graphics.
Sound: Hmm what can i say about the sounds. The voice acting was very good, and i found they did a good job of stereotyping everyone in the game to a point were it was verging on the edge of realism and humor which i enjoyed. One of my memorable moments in the game is when one of the nerds Algeron starts to talk to you in gansta-speak, i laughed forever during that. The traveling music was good too, although it got repeptetive near the end when i was using my bike to get everywhere. Overall the sound is verging on great, if only the ambient sounds you here were as good as the voice work.
Replay value: There are a TON of things to unlock in this game, however it suffers from one thing i hate in all video games. It has a few unlockables that you can only get at a certain time, if you wait too long, you cant get them. However i have recently become a fan of 100% in games, i rarely get them, but i love trying to, and this one gave me a lot to unlock. theres about 15 races yo ucan do, theres odd jobs random town and school folk hand out, and there are of cours the rubber bands and grottos and gremilns cards that are hidden throughout the game (somthing like 75 and 50 respectivly). Plus there are clothes, hats, room decorations, hidden spots, minigames, and some other stuff that can all be found or unlocked that make for alot of fun. Overall this game has maybe a week or two of extra replay time on it, i wanted to keep playing it, but i got Okami for a late birthday present and that needed my immediate attention.
Difficulty: Hmm, this is one of those games that is just easy. Its not super easy, infact i failed a couple of missions throughout the game, and the final classes are slightly hard, but in the end it isnt a hard game. I wish it was just a bit harder, but the difficulty level is nice for quick progression. You should never be stuck in this game although some missions are a bit tough. Overall, its easy
Other Notes This game features a extensive record of everything, from how many food fights yo uhave started, to your distance traveled on all forms of transportation (even lawn mowers) to the number of times you were arrested, to jsut about anything you could imagine. It was a decently long game, shorter than i expected but it was still a decent length. One thing that dissapointed me was the inability to drive cars, i figured they would be your "Ultimate Vehicle" but unfortunatly yo uare limited to running, skateboarding, bikes, mopeds and a go kart, which are all quite good, an i suppose Jimmy is a little young for driving, it jsut seemed like it was missing that quality. One very dissapointing thing however was a lack of tricks you could perform on your bikes and skate board. You could Ollie and Bunny Hop and then do rotations and i think i managed a flip or two on both as well, but that was it. No kickflips, grabs, grinds or anything which i found very dissapointing.

In the end this game was great. It was very interesting and i loved all the characters. The game was interesting all the way through and a decent length. I recomend it to most people but it isnt for everyone, i know one of my friends wouldnt like it because it jsut isnt his type of game, but if you like the action adventure genre then you will deffentlly enjoy this game.

Well that is all for my review on Bully for PS2. I dont know what game will come next, but i will eventually update for every game in my library, which i think is over 20. Hope you enjoyed this... or atleast that someone read it :P
